Hamilton Tournament - April 4th-6th

Game 1 vs Almaquin Gazelles - T 1-1
The ESS Golden Hawks faced the Almaguin Gazelles to start off the final tournament play before Provincials. The Hawks had never seen their opponent play previously so decided the best plan was to play a tight defensive game with a hard back check. The Hawks were successful in limiting the Gazelles to only 4 shots in the first period. Their reward came with 1 second left in the period when Devin found Megan in front of the net and she rifled in the shot before the end of the period. The Gazelles drew even in the 2nd period off a face-off that created a rebound opportunity to even up the score. The two teams were evenly matched and neither could manage the go ahead goal.

Game 2 vs Grand River Mustangs - T 0-0
The Hawks second opponent of the tournament was the Grand River Mustangs. This turned out to be a very evenly matched game. Neither team could take a lead. Both teams had 3 power play chances. The game ended in a scoreless tie with Maddy D earning her 9th complete game shutout of the season.

Game 3 vs Flamborough Falcons - L 3-0
The final game of the round robin against the Flamborough Falcons started late. This allowed the teams to see the result in the other division game. The outcome of that game worked for both Georgina and Flamborough. A win by either team would put them in the finals. Unfortunately, the Hawks got off to a sluggish start and found themselves shorthanded for most of the 1st period, including almost 2 minutes where they were 2 players short. The Hawks killed all the penalties off, but never got back on track offensively with a depleted lineup. Flamborough took the lead in the 2nd period and got another midway through the 3rd period. The Hawks pulled their goalie with over 2 minutes remaining (while shorthanded), and gave up the 3rd goal with just 16 seconds remaining.
Shots on Goal: Georgina - 8 / Flamborough - 23
Twoonie Board Winner - Jill Davidson

Golden Hawks Advance to Provincials

Mar 2, 2014 vs Markham Stouffville Stars - W 3-1
The Midget B Golden Hawks disposed of the pesky Markham-Stouffville Stars with a more decisive victory in the final game of the series. Going into the game, the Hawks had to win or tie the game to take the series. A loss would put the series to tiebreakers that did not favour the Golden Hawks at the start of the game. The Hawks outshot the Stars by a 22-12 margin and sealed up the victory by scoring 2 power play goals. The Hawks scored 2 goals in the 2nd period just 36 seconds apart. The first was a power play goal scored by Mackenzie, assisted by Megan, and Kylie. On the same shift, Mackenzie scored again, assisted by Megan. The Stars came back with a goal to make it 2-1 by the end of the periood. However, the period win just shifted a tiebreaker in Georgina's favour. The Stars would have to rally and win by 2 goals in order to take the series. The Hawks locked down and scored a power play goal late in the 3rd period to seal the victory. The final goal was scored by Taylor, assisted by Mariah, and Melissa. The win sends the Hawks to the Provincial Championship weekend. The Chmpionship is 6 weeks away from this game and leaves the Hawks scrambling to fill in their schedule.

Hawks Up a Game in Playdowns

Mar 1, 2014 vs Markham Stouffville Stars - W 1-0
The ESS Golden Hawks took the second game of the provincial playdown against Markham-Stouffville Stars by a score of 1-0. The Hawks started strong and then got a little disorganized after taking a penalty. By the end of the first period, the Hawks got their game back on track and were rewarded with a goal. Mackenzie put home the goal assisted by Megan, after some good offensive zone work. The Hawks kept the pressure on through the final 2 periods but could not increase the margin of victory. Maddy D turned away 16 shots for the shutout. Her 3rd shutout in her last four games.

Sluggish Start to Provincial Series

Feb 22, 2014 vs Markham Stouffville Stars - T 2-2
Following a strong series in the LLFHL playoffs, the Provincial series opener against the Markham-Stouffville Stars seemed to moving at a much slower pace. The Hawks did get out to a 2-0 first period lead. Katie scored the opening goal as she broke down the left wing and put a puck in the top of the net. The 2nd goal game on a puck that seemed to handcuff and injure the Markham goalie, scored by Taylor and assisted by Maddie Bell. Markham pulled within a goal by the end of the period. The Hawks could not bring up the tempo of the game and took a few penalties. The first penalty cost them the game tying goal. The result ensured that this series will go to 3 games.
